Transitioning Back to In-Person Learning

ACC 611 Office Hours

I scheduled a Zoom call with Alyssa (our ACC 611 seminar facilitator) to discuss my concerns about studying for ACC 611. She gave a couple of tips:

  1. Don’t always need to start at the conceptual framework level (eg. is this an asset or liability or not). Jump right into the more specific standard (eg. when analyzing the Financial Instruments scenarios, it’s pretty safe to assume they are financial assets, so don’t need to do the analysis of whether they are an asset or not).
  2. Drawing out decision trees could be helpful for some standards (eg. revenue recognition, related party transactions).
  3. Definitions, initial recognition, and measurement are pretty much always important, in every standard.
  4. Sometimes there may not be a clear objective (eg. the Financial Instruments seminar scenarios did not have any real client objective, so that’s fine).
  5. She also suggested that as we gain more familiarity with the standards, we can whittle down our notes, and convert our typed (detailed) notes into shorter handwritten versions with just the key information.

ACC 650

I cried again after this class. It was yet another totally brand new form of case writing, brand new role, I felt totally lost again.

ACC 680

MAcc went back to in-person classes today, so I had to skip this class because I’m flying into Waterloo tomorrow. I emailed Prof Vanden Bosch last week about switching into one of her Wednesday class times, and she said to email back the day I land. So I’ll shoot her a followup email tomorrow.

Standards I Read Today

  • So happy that CAS 520 is another short standard!
  • CAS 530 took a bit longer, but I got it done in about 45 minutes. Felt kind of rushed because my office hour appointment with Alyssa was coming up as I was finishing.
